Flash Fiction Contest for 2022

The Danbury Cultural Commission invites Danbury students in grades nine through twelve to enter our Flash Fiction Contest. The contest is also open to any writers who do not formally attend a high school but are between the ages of fourteen through eighteen. Any high school aged student, studying in, or living in Danbury, may enter, but a Danbury student must have a social security number filed with the City of Danbury to receive a cash prize.

Stories must be Flash Fiction, from five hundred to one thousand words and use school-appropriate language and subject matter. No more than two Flash Fiction works per author should be submitted. Flash Fiction in non-English must have a written English translation. The deadline for entries is January twenty fifth. Students of winning submissions must be prepared to read the story aloud and then give a brief description of their inspiration for it at the May awards ceremony.

What is the Danbury Cultural Commission

The Danbury Cultural Commission is the citizen's voice for supporting cultural and artistic events in Danbury. They support and help fund performing arts programs for Danbury residents free of charge. The eleven-member Commission supports the development of new arts programs and supports and funds local arts, cultural and ethnic activities. The Commission also encourages, promotes and co-sponsors events which benefit and improve the quality of life for Danbury residents. Danbury ALERT is the City of Danbury’s new mass notification system powered by the Everbridge platform. Sign-up to receive time-sensitive emergency and community alerts. You can select multiple delivery methods such as email, text, phone, the Everbridge mobile app, and more! Messages will be sent to wherever you specify on a priority basis to ensure you receive the vital information you need. This system enables the City to provide you with critical information quickly for a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, and water main breaks. Festival of Lessons and Carols December 24, 2021 - The Valley Presbyterian Church in Brookfield

 From Nearby Neighbors - Festival of Lessons and Carols, A Historic Musical Service.

The Valley Presbyterian Church in Brookfield is pleased to present this service on December Twenty fourth at Five pm. This Christmas Eve service is free and open to the public. Special music will include pieces with cello, violin and piano. The program promises to delight audiences of all ages and all are welcome. The service will conclude with a congregational candlelight as a send off.


The backbone of the service, the lessons and the prayers, has remained virtually unchanged since the first presentation on Christmas Eve in Nineteen Eighteen at King’s College, Cambridge, England.


The Valley Church at Twenty One West Whisconier Road in Brookfield, and is wheelchair accessible. Please wear a mask for the protection of all visitors. For more information call the church.

Weekend before Christmas December 13 through 19, 2021

'Twas the weekend before Christmas and there are still events to fill your holiday weekends. First on Saturday and Sunday is the Santa Train at the Danbury Railway Museum starting at half past noon and running into the evening. Next up on Saturday are the Guided Tours of four of the Danbury Museum Historic Buildings on the Main Street campus. You need reservations so call the museum.

Also on Saturday, if you would like to sing Handel’s Messiah the Danbury Music Centre is hosting up to one hundred singers at one thirty PM in the First Congregational Church of Danbury. Call for reservations. And on Sunday the Danbury Music Centre hosts the newly formed Danbury Community Band with An American Holiday Concert at 4pm.

Singers on Saturday December 18, 2021 - Danbury Music Centre

 Singers on Saturday! 

If you like to sing Handel’s Messiah then the Danbury Music Centre is hosting an event for you. Up to one hundred singers will meet up at the First Congregational Church of Danbury, Saturday December Eighteenth, when the doors open at One Thirty. The Guest Conductor is Tina Johns Heidrich of the Connecticut Master Chorale, with Accompanist, Max Vladimiroff.


Chorister are welcome to join in by singing selected movements of Handel’s Messiah. Please bring your Schirmer Edition scores. Up to 100 singers will participate but you have to pre-register at the Danbury Music Centre web site.

An American Holiday Concert December 19, 2021 - Danbury Music Centre

 

The Danbury Community Band performs, An American Holiday Concert, on December nineteenth at four PM in the First Congregational Church of Danbury.

This is the Inaugural concert of the Danbury Community Band, the newest musical ensemble offered through the Danbury Music Centre. This will be a concert of holiday tunes by American composers Morton Gould, Leroy Anderson and more!

Albert Montecalvo is the Music Director and Conductor. The Band is composed of musicians throughout the greater Danbury area.

The concert is free and Donations will be gratefully accepted at the door.

SANTA'S RAILYARD 2021

 The Danbury Railway Museum is pleased to host the Ride a vintage train to Santa's toyland on Saturday and Sunday, December 4 through 19. The rides includes, the train ride in the railyard, a gift for children, a visit with Santa in Toyland plus the exhibits in the restored 1903 station and railyard, operating layouts, and displays. Trains leave every half hour starting at 12:30. Admission to the museum is $12.

The Railway Museum is the old train station on White Street Danbury.
