THE POWER OF THE IMAGE March 6 7pm

Join the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut for a conversation with journalists, photographers, activists, social service leaders, historians, and anyone interested in the topic.

Richard Falco, President of Vision Project and Professor at Sacred Heart University, will present a brief media presentation followed by a discussion of the images. The hope is to produce documentary material and educational programs, that encourage understanding, and awareness about a broad variety of social issues. It is the process of creating images that affect people, and using the camera as a personal voice. The presentation is designed to be engaging and to introduce VISION PROJECT.

Parallel Practices WCSU March 4

Eleven critically acclaimed artists who work in more than one medium will participate this winter in Parallel Practices. This exhibition runs through March 4, 2018, in the Visual and Performing Arts Center Art Gallery, at Western Connecticut State University Westside campus 43 Lake Avenue Extension, Danbury.

Parallel Practices showcases the cross-pollination of ideas and the unexpected variety of expression that happens concurrently in these artists’ studios, creating parallel bodies of work, each equally important to their practices. The exhibition will present the participating artists’ works in mediums that include painting, sculpture, collage, drawing, ceramics, animation, installation and photography.

Richter Association for the Arts Film Series March 5

Monday March 5is the second of three, Richter Association for the Arts winter film series. The films are screened at Danbury Public Library, 170 Main Street in Danbury. Showings and discussion are Mondays in the Farioly Program Room from 2 to 3:30 PM, and continues next two.

The next film is titled Who the heck is Jackson Pollock? and the final title is First Position.

A discussion of the films and a reception will follow each presentation.

Ride a Vintage Train to Visit the Easter Bunny March 24 to 31

The Easter Bunny will once again pay a visit to the Danbury Railway Museum and you can take a ride in a vintage train through the historic railyard to visit him. This popular annual family event will take place weekends March 24 through 31. Museum hours vary. Trains leave every 30 minutes from 12:30 to 3:30 P M. Admission is twelve dollars for those age 2 and over. Each child will receive a small gift from the Bunny.

10th Annual Teen Safe Driving Video Contest Deadline March 1, 2018

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, and Travelers announced their joint sponsorship of the tenth annual Teen Safe Driving Video contest for high school students around the state. The theme this year is: Teen Safe Driver: Could This Be You? Every Second Matters.
D M V, and Travelers partner each year to raise awareness about safety behind the wheel with the state’s youngest and most inexperienced drivers. The goal is to create peer-to-peer education and influence about developing safe driving habits.
The Public Service Announcement video must be no longer than forty-five seconds in length. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winning High Schools.

Richter Association for the Arts Film Series February 26

Save the date, Monday February 26, for the first of the Richter Association for the Arts winter film series. The films are screened at Danbury Public Library, 170 Main Street in Danbury. This year the series begins on Monday from 2 to 3:30 PM, and continues for the next two Mondays at the same time.

The first film is titled Let Freedom Sing, or, How Music Inspired the Civil Rights Movement.

A celebration of the life and music of Marian Anderson at Western Connecticut State University will be February 27, 6 pm, in the Veronica Hagman Concert Hall, of the Visual and Performing Arts Center, on the university's Westside campus. 43 Lake Avenue Extension in Danbury. Guests are invited to attend a community birthday party celebration for Anderson and learn how they may become a part of the initiative to name the School of Visual and Performing Arts in her honor. Tickets are $35.

The Connecticut Book Awards Are Back! April 20

The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut announces, the Connecticut Center for the Book, at Connecticut Humanities, is now accepting submissions for, the Connecticut Book Awards! These awards recognize the best books of Twenty Seventeen by authors and illustrators who reside in Connecticut. Award winners will receive exposure in Connecticut media outlets and personal appearances in Connecticut locations.

A Night Of Rock, Roll & Soul Saturday February 24, 2018 @8PM

Be at The Palace Danbury for a great big night of Rock, Roll, n Soul when Blues Hall of Famer, Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez share the stage with legendary drummer Liberty Devitto and his new band The Slim Kings.

Liberty Devitto is the undisputed champion of drummers.

He’s played to sold out stadiums around the world, recorded multi-platinum records, and has backed some of the most iconic musicians in the world. For 30 years Liberty was the drummer for Billy Joel’s band and played on every one of Billy’s hits up until 2006.

The Beehive Queen knows how to rock & roll!

CULTURAL ALLIANCE OF WESTERN CONNECTICUT 2018 "ACCESSIBLE ART" SERIES UNTIL April 13

The Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut has kicked off a new year of its multi-site series of visual art shows, Accessible Art. With five rounds of exhibitions spread over the course of twenty eighteen, Accessible Art provides those who live, work, and play in, or visit, the Greater Danbury region with a sense of the importance of Art in our everyday lives. This round of Accessible Art runs through Friday, April 13th.

Library Card Design Contest Submission Deadline: February sixteenth at 5pm

Get your art materials out and your creativity flowing. The Danbury Library wants you to design the next generation of library cards! The competition is open to Students, Kindergarten to grade 12.
Design a colorful card, either using traditional materials, or in a digital medium. Your original artwork must fit inside a horizontal rectangle measuring 8 by 5 inches and be free of copyright restrictions. For full details of design guidelines, go to danburylibrary dot org.
The library judging panel will choose two winning designs, one from a student in Kindergarten to grade 5, and another from grades 6 to 12. Each winner will receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

Lullaby Requiem

In the history of classical music, there has never been a major orchestral and choral requiem written as a memorial for the children we have lost to violence! It was with this thought that Eric Lewis began composing the Lullaby Requiem.

The Lullaby Requiem is conceived as an eleven movement symphony. Six movements are currently completed, the other 5 awaiting funding that will allow the project to continue and move forward into production.

Theatrical Performance: W.E.B. Du Bois – Man for All Times February 11th at 2pm, Farioly Program Room

  The Danbury Library will host the Pulse Theater Ensemble production of, W E B DuBois, Man for All Times. This play entertains and enthralls, as it compels the viewer to travel on this near 100 year journey. Brian Richardson portrays W E B DuBois, a black American born just after the Civil War, and 5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

This reader's theater presentation, written and directed by Alexa Kelly, will take place on February 11th at 2 pm, in the Farioly Program Room of the Danbury Library, 170 Main Street, Danbury.

Oscar Madness at The Palace Danbury Feb 10

Saturday February 10 is Oscar Madness at The Palace Danbury. The best in Animation, Live Action and Documentary short films will be screened all in one day.

The Academy Award nominated short films are often the most creative and surprising films of any kind. However, these films are not regularly shown in theaters. This year, movie buffs will have the opportunity to see all the nominated films at The Palace Danbury.

State Troubadour nominations February 5

  The Connecticut Office of the Arts is currently accepting nominations for the position of State Troubadour. The State Troubadour serves as an ambassador of, music and song, and promotes cultural literacy among residents.

An individual singer-songwriter must be nominated by a Connecticut resident and deemed eligible to apply. Read all of the details at cultureandtourism dot org.
